Chunky Planter Build Process

The (almost) final job was to sort out the cross-pieces themselves. I started by marking up the cross-pieces using the side pieces for reference:

I then cut the edges of all the joints with a hand saw:

For the ones in the middle of the cross-pieces (where they cross), I wobbled out the bulk of the waste:

Then finished with a chisel:

A quick test of the fit:

For the end rebates, I just cut them out with the hand saw:

Here are two of the (six) finished cross-pieces:

With that I thought I was finished (apart from treating the wood and assembling everything), so I laid all the parts out for a photo:

Shortly after taking that photo, I realised I'd forgotten one last pieces, but it was quick and easy to make as it doesn't have any complicated cut-outs or rounded-over corners:

I then decided it would be a good idea to try putting the planters together for a trial fit. Here's the big planter after the first couple of layers were added:

For now I've just covered them with a tarpaulin and whenever the weather next looks like it might be dry for a few days in a row I'll take them apart again and start the dull job of treating the wood.
