Chunky Planter Build Process

The planter's been under a tarpaulin for more than a month and I thought it was time to pull my finger out and get on with it as the weather was looking okay. I took it apart today and gave all the cut surfaces a coat of Ronseal End Grain protector. I really wasn't expecting it to be bright blue!
Hopefully the decking stain that's going on afterwards will cover up that blue colour; otherwise I'm not sure what I'll do!
At the moment, my plan is to do a coat of decking stain as I assemble it. That will mean assembling it while the stain is wet but gives me somewhere to put all the bits while it dries. I'll then do a second coat of stain on the whole assembled planter. If anyone can tell me why that's a really bad idea, then please do so (but preferably before tomorrow!)
