Coffee Grinder

On the right of the photograph above you can see a coffee grinder I turned from an oak spindle blank. When we go on holiday and stay in self-catering properties, we take a manual coffee grinder (up to now the one on the left of the photo) with us, along with some of our favourite beans, a couple of filter cones and some filters. Normally we just use an electric grinder but I've come to think of the quiet process of grinding the morning coffee as being a lovely thing to do when on holiday and I thought it would be nice to have a go at turning my own grinder.

It uses the Crushgrind Barista kit as the mechanism. I found it quite a challenging bit of turning, not least because the oak spindle blank was only just big enough so I couldn't afford to get the centres in the wrong place or turn too much away.

Here are a couple of extra photos showing the grain on each side:

These are all the parts that make up the grinder:

The handle came with the mechanism; the oak bits (lid, mechanism holder and coffee grounds catcher) all came out of the spindle blank. When I made the lid I realised I'd cut the spindle blank a little bit too short so the mechanism protruded through the top. A quickly turned (and epoxied into place) brass sleeve sorted that problem out.

Finish is Chestnut Hard Wax Oil on the outside and food safe mineral oil on the inside.
