After posting my woes on the woodhaven forum, the ever helpful and skilful members there reckoned I could repair the crack, so I've poured some glue into the hole and clamped it together. I've also cleaned up as much of the dried glue as I can easily manage so perhaps tomorrow I'll have another go (with a thicker and stumpier wedge):
The shabby saw cut you can see in the tenon is the result of me having to mash one of the wedges a bit to get the tenon out of its mortice. I've cleaned it up a bit with a saw but its a lot wider than originally intended. Hopefully a nice chunky wedge will sort that one out too.
