Dowel Plate

This is a simple dowel plate, used (as the name implies) for making dowels. It was made from a piece of 6 mm mild steel, through which I drilled holes from 5 mm to 12 mm in 0.5 mm increments. The holes were labelled with a set of number punches.

To use the dowel plate, a piece of wood is formed into a square cross-section, slightly larger than the desired dowel size. It is then hammered through the dowel plate, starting a few sizes larger than the target and working down through the holes one at a time. You can see the result of my first test of the dowel plate in the photo at the top of the page.

I am a hobbyist metalworker and woodworker. I work as an electronic design engineer and spend most of my working days in front of a computer so I enjoy having the opportunity to use my hands and make things in my spare time. I particularly enjoy making tools as I can then use them on other projects. This website showcases some of the things I've made.
