Carriage Gear Protector

This is a very simple modification to make and is definitely worth the effort. As you're cutting on the mini-lathe, lots of swarf rapidly works its way into the gears in the carriage. The swarf then causes the gears to bind up. The modification only involves drilling and tapping some small mounting holes in the carriage handwheel assembly (I used M2) and cutting a piece of perspex or similar to the right shape to shield the gears. The piece of plastic I used came out of the bin so I've no idea what it is. This is described very clearly on the mini-lathe.com site or on Varmint Al's site.
